ARLINGTON, VIRGINIA, 2007. “When we first buried my son,” Paula Zwillinger says, “I would look around the cemetery and count the stones in his row. Then it got to the point where there was another row, and another row, so now I don’t count the stones. On any given weekend,” Paula explains, “families and friends come to Section 60 to visit their loved ones. There’s Maria, whose kids climb the trees; Juan, who lost his fiancee, the first nurse to get killed in Iraq; Xiomara, who, though she lost a son in Iraq, has two sons now in Afghanistan. And there’s a young girl who visits her father.” The girl’s name is Kayley Sharp. Her father was killed five months earlier, when an IED exploded near the Humvee he was riding in.
